OBITUARY.

MR WALTER HANNAY. ' 'Deep regret will be felt, especially in railway and shipping circles, at the ■ death, of Mr Walter Hannay. which oc- ;; curred suddenly at his homo in ■) ltfatvkesbury avenue, St. Albans, yesterday morning. Mr Hannay, who - vas a native of England, went to sea at an early ago. and had a most romantic and adventurous career in many parts of the world. For some time ho was sailing out of Chicago in American ships on tne Great Lakes, and later he was engaged as a collector of shipping tolls on the River Hudson in New iork. He also saw service in the - Peruvian Navy, in which he attained the rank of lieutenant. Before finally settling jn New Zealand, Mr Hannay spent some time in Australia. Hie entered the service of tho New Zealand Railway Department many years ago, end quickly rose to the rank of stationWaster, in which capacity he served Weral years at Bluff ana Greymouth . glare bis final transfer to Lyttedton. •He spent about thirteen years in Lyt- : telton, during which period he earned the confidence and esteem of the shipand commercial community by his ability, tact, and impartiality. His retirement on superannuation in 1912 was regretted by his subordinates and all with whom he had business dealings, and he was the recipient of several presentations and testimonials. In 1913 Mr and Mrs Hannay innde an extended visit to Britain and the Continent, visiting many places which have since been ravaged bythe var.

Mr Hannay, who was in his 70th year, had lately been in indifferent flealtfl, but his death was not expected •% is survived by a widow, one son! and four daughters. The son, who was «n engineer in the service of the New Zealand Shipping Company, and who enlisted in King Edward's Horse in August, 1914, has been serving at the front m France for upwards of twelve months.
