OUR SAILOR HEROES.

XATAL FIGHT MEMORIAL

FUND.

A GENEROUS RESPONSE

It is with much pleasure that we are able to announce that a very generous response ha s already been made to our appc.nl, and that of the Navy League, for donations io relieve the necessities of tho widows and orphans of the gallant seamen wiio perished in the great naval battle off Jutland, when the honour of the British Navy was so worthily upheld.

Within twelve hours of the publication of the appeal in yesterday's "Pr o6s"' closo upou a thousand pounds was received by the Editor, in action to a similar amount received a* the ofiice of the Navy League.

As explained in our leading columns, we hope that this movement will lead to the establishment of a Dominion Gratitude to the Navy Fund, to help the dependents of all men in tho Royal Navy who may have been killed or disabled in the Empire's service.

Appended are lists of tho subscriptions already received at "Tho Press" office, and by the Navy League, respectively, and Wc would earnestly appeal io those who have not already done so, to send in at once a donation, however small, as a mark of their gratitudo to the brave men of the Royal Navy.

Sir, —With all my heart I wish to support Dr. Levinge's appeal. Our splendid sailors in tho North Sea alone have saved our own coasts from being harried and ravaged, and in the recent great battle deliberately sacrificed themselves for tho Empire. How better can we show our gratitude to the men who have died for us than by helping out of our means to ! provide some extra comfort for their wives and families. 1 enclose cheque for £50, —Yours faithfully, H. OOTTERILL. TO THE EDITOR OF "THE FKESS." Sir, —I trust that -Vcw Zealand will respond handsomely to the Navy League's appeal for assisting the dependents of those great fearless men who laid down their lives for Empire in the "North Sea. We may talk of tho deeds of the Navy, and I admjt they are many and great, but tho heroic fight of our Fleet last week will stand as the greatest and most beautiful oxample of pluck' and sacrifice the nation hag ever known. Thousands of sailors lives have been given—and given generously—then do let us give generously to tho wee mites and weeping -wives who

are left tn mourn their heroes. let us cable months hence that £ 9 0 00ft ' has been subscribed—no. at onc« kt us wire them a million pounds iS Erm. pathy. Six thousand wonderful examples of the race are gone, and man J thousands wait fearlessly to follow til' six thousand if neccssary. In this country hunareds of thou .sands of pounds arc paid annuallv fn* liro protection. Is it too much to aak the equal of one year's premium to help to protect our liberty, our honour —our all? There can be no shadow of doubt that the Xavv will hav 0 to do herculean and bloodv work to sava us Then ie b us at least, gir 0 then and theirs lovo and thanks in a practical way. helping with all our rniekt to repair thoir wrecked homes.—T m, etc., ' E - S.
