An export tax on rubber'was recently imposed by tho Administration of Samoa. The" manager of a British plantation in tho colony, who is visiting Auckland, remarked that the tax is a serious handicap on a new industry. The tax is 1-Jd per lb, and as the export valno of rubber is about 2s od per lb, it is equivalent to o per cent. This is considered by the planters to bo a heavy charge upon an industry which is only now beginning to bo profitable after years of capital investment. Tho planters, however, hare- no wish to avoid taxation that may be necessary in the interests of the conntry, but they do point out' that tho new export duties press upon them, while tho Germans in Samoa escape.
