VETERANS' ASSOCIATION
MEMORIAL SERVICE. The annual service in memory of the men who gave their lives for their Empire in the South African "War was held in Victoria sriuartr yesterday afternoon, in the pretence of a number ol people. A combined force of South African veterans, and older men. who had fought on other battlefields for their country, ''Ansjncs,'' Territorials, and men of tho 0-I).C. paraded at the Kiny Edward Barracks under the command of Colonel Crosswel!. There were approximated •j'2 veterans. '2S Anzacs under Major F. Brown, 20 territorials under SergcantMaior Ross, and 20 men of the C.D.C. under Mr J. McLean. The C.Y.C. Baud, under Bandmaster Lieut. 0. riiom. headed the procession, which proeedetl through the Square to the nlncfs where the service was held at tho loot of the Victoria Statue. A mon«; those who were present at the service were Surgoon-General Henderson, Colonel Chaffey. Colonel Cooper. Colonel Hobday, his Worship the Mayor, and Mr •!. •!. Dougall (Commandant of the C.D.C.). An apology was received from Colonel H. Slater. AM).. whose absence was caused through illneis. The service opened with a hvmn and prayer by the Rev. A. H. Norris, and short addresses were si von by his Worship the Mayor. Mr .1. J. Dougall, and tho Bev. A. H. Norris. During an interval, wreaths to the memory" of the fallen were placed round the base of the Queen Victoria Statue, and before the closing of the service with the singing of tho National Anthem, General Henderson inspected the men on parade. A collection was taken up in aid of tlie Veterans' Sick and Relief Fund, to which the public responded liberally.
