PRICE OF WHEAT AND FLOUR.
STATEMENT IN THE HOUSE. (special to "Tin: "PRESS.'') WELLINGTON. June 2. Some remarks concerning tho i>r:;'o of wheat and flour wore made in the House to-day by the Prime Minister. | It had been assorted by Mr Payne that bakers were keeping the price of bread as high as or 10c! for the 4!b loaf, then farmers were getting as little as 4s per bushc] for wheat. Mr Massev said lie had just made enquiries regarding the price of bread in Wellington and had been informed that it was be in.;: sold over the counter at 8d the 41b loaf. Of course some ! peopio insisted on having their bread delivered and delivery lie was informed cost three halfpence per loaf. He read a telegram that he had just received from Kopu, near Thames, regarding the visit of the Hoard of Trade to that district. The Board had enquired into the prices of butter and bread yesterday. and as a result tho . telegram stated that the price of bread had been that (lay rcduced from lOd to Od for the 41b loaf. Mr Payne: There you are. It has been JOa and is still 9d there. Mr Massey said it must be remembered that it cost something to get flour to Thames. Mr Poole referred to the price of Auckland flour. Mr' Massey said that wheat for the manufacture of Auckland flour had to be brought from the South or Australia. He had had enquiries made regarding the price of flour in Wellington, and was informed that it could now bo obtained for £12 10s per ton, less 2j per cent, discount. Mr Poole: That 16 the price to the bakers. 3lf Massey: To anybody, I presume.
