TURKISH CAMPAIGNS.
EAST OF SUEZ. ANZAC MOUNTED TROOPS ENGAGED, ! ENEMY HEAVILY PUNISHED. The High Commissioner reports:— LONDON, June 1 (4.30 p.m.). ! The General Officer commanding in Egypt reports:—"The Australian and New Zealand mounted troops carried out another successful enterprise on Wednesday morning, delivering an attack on an enemy post at Birsalmans, twenty miles from Katia. "The enemy was compelled to abandon his camp, and was driven to the eastward with considerable losses. "Our aeroplanes took over the pursuit, from the mounted troops, and bombed th© flying enemy, inflicting further casualties." Katia is about 27 miles east by north of Kantara, and 32 miles south-east of Port Said. It was raided somo weeks ago by a forco of Turks and Germans, wno drove out the small garrison. Katia is on the desert route, skirting the sea coast to El Arish. It is a well surrounded by/ groves of palm trees. DISTRESS IN STRIA, AMERICAN ASSISTANCE REQUESTED. ("Times" and "Sydney Sun" Services.) .LONDON, Juno 1. Tho Cairo correspondent; of "The Times" says that the Syrian community has approached tne American agent, requesting American assistance to alleviate their groat sufferings, the Ottoman Government permitting tho distribution of foodstuffs. Refugees bring harrowing details of distress, and state that imperative action is necessary to prevent other tegrettable causes which aro threatening.
