W. Thompson, of Oamaru, are spending a holiday in Christchurch. Mr A. W. Bennett, manager of they. New Zealand Company, returned to Christchurch by the fen? steamer yesterday morning. -i; Mr J. M. Thomson and Mrs Thomson-; (Auckland) are on a visit to Christy church. They leave for Dunedin morrow. The death is announced of Mr Arthur Prebble, a well-known resident *of Blenheim. Ho was for some years a jJrominent figure in Marlborough » cricketing circles. Captain Arthur Allen, of New Plymouth,'who has lately come out from England, where he was an onthuijiasc in poultry circles, was one of tlio judges at the Poultry Exhibition yesterday in tho pigeon classes. Dr. Scannell, of Tcmuka, has,.received a cablegram stating that his brother, Surgeon-Captain W. G. Scannell, who has been suffering from fcever &nddysentery, has been reported fit for activo service again. Mr R. Hirter, of Ross, who recently celebrated the tiOth anniversary of his birth, was presented with an address by the Ross Borough Council, of which ho was a member for a number of years. He was also a Mayor of the town.
Mr J. E. Petherick, a member of tho Christcliurch Licensing Committee, has • been accepted for activc .service, and, left for Trentham on Wednesday evening. In apologising by letter tor his absence at yesterday mornings ing of the committee, he tendered lus resignation. Mr J. Tangney, 0 f Temuka, has had, six sons at the front, and last week 8 seventh. cnli6ted (writes our correspondent;. Two were killed, and one wj# wounded and is in hospital. Mr Tangney has four other sons, and two or these have declared their intention' of enlisting. •'
