WAR PENSIONS BILL.
0 PASSED BY LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. (PRESS ASSOCIATION" TKLEGEAM.) WELLINGTON, June 1. In the Legislative Council this afternoon the Hon. Sir Francis Bell moved the second reading of the War Pensions Act Amendment Bill. Ho explained that aa it was essentially a money Bill, it could not he altered by the Council. The Hon. W. Beehan said parents should be given pensions by right, as provided for by clause 9 in the case of a widow.
The Hon. Sir William Hall-Jones referred to the pensions granted to members of the Civil Service, and claimed that men who risked their lives for the Empire were entitled to most favourable consideration.
The Hon. It. Moore said the Act had been considerably widened. He thought that Mr Beehan's suggestion would be going too far. The Hon. S. Thorne George said he thought a schemc of insurance might have been arranged to cover lives of men while at the war. This would have cost about one million pounds for 50,000 men. He considered that this was a matter that should be looked into by the Government. The second reading was carried. The Bill was reported from Committee without amendment, and read a third time and passed. At 3.30 p.m. the Council adjourned until Wednesday next..
