TO-NIGHT,

The surplus of fit men for the Canterbury Infantry draft of the l»th Iteinforccwents yesterday jumped from 71 to S4. Christchurch increased its surplus from 3S to 00, and Kniapoi from 14 to 16, but Timaru fell from 20 to 10. Nelson's surplus of 10 remained the same, -whilst Greyruouth ieduoed its deficiency from 11 to 7. Tho following tabio illustrates the position to dat&: —

The Christchurch quota will parade at the King Edward li&rracks &t» 6 o'clock, and, csoorted by the C.D.C.. will march to the railway station, where they will board a special train for Lyttelton conveying the Timaru men. There are 50 men already available for the Kaiapoi Infantry draft of the ISth Reinforcements.

The first of the Canterbury quotas for the 17th .Reinforcements to go into camp was that from. Jiaiapoi, which paraded at the King Edward Barracks last night, well over strength. lo r the quota 67 Infantry and 2 Artillery wore required, but. 83 Infantry and. 3 Artillery were secured. Th e men were, as a whole, of a fine type, well up to the standard of previous drafts from Norm Canterbury. . At the Barracks the men were bnefly faxewelled by Colonel Chaff ey, Officer Commanding the District, and then, escorted by the Christchurch Cadet Bugle Band, they marched to the Chnstchurch Railway Station, where they boarded the second express for Lyttelton. They left for Wellington m charge of Lieutenant Hayman aad Sff-geant-Major Phillips. With the draft left two non-commissioned officers (on probation), for the 19th Reinforcements, li. J. A very large crowd gathered on th© B&ngiora Hallway Station on the departure of the midday train yesterday, wheal a batch of 13 local men left to join the 17th Reinforcements. The Mayor (Mr 0. I. Jennings), and the county chairman (Mr F. Horrell) wished the men God-speed on behalf of the people of the district. YESTERDAY'S - ENLISTMENTS. Thcitt wot a big drop in the enlistments yesterday no compared with the past few days. Altogether, forty men registered, and of this number thirty-three were single and five married, twp not stating their condition. Those who registered were: — W. N.
