DEPARTING SOLDIERS.

VARIOUS PRESENTATIONS,

Tho residents of Hinds tendered a farewoll social to Private .Leslie Tilson, the third brothsr who lias voluni-eered for tho front. Thero * was a large attendance. Mr J. M. Hampton occupiod tho chair, and in a 6tirring patriotic speech presented the guest with a. beautiful liiedai. Lieut. Guinneee, on bohaif of the Hinds Signal Company, then presented him with a pair of military brushes. Advantage was taken of the gathering to present a gold medal to Trooper Jackson, who liad been invalided home from hjgvpt. The chairman, in making the presentation, made touching reference to tho action of the New &eoJandors at Gallipoli. Songs wore stmg by Misses Craigie, Holland, Shaw, M. and 3C. Rogers, Mc.estq Rogers, Guinness, Aitken, Broun, and Keith, and recitations by Miss M. O'Reilly and Master J. O'Reilly, * The accompanists were Misses O. ilcKonzie. and M. and K. Rogers. After a bountiful aupper tho room was cleared for dancing, the music being supplied gratuitously by Hisses J. Millen, C. and E. Becklev, assisted by Misses Hampton and Davison. A social *im held in Killinchy ITnll on xhuradiiy evening, when tho residents assembled to farewell Privates H. Chappoil -and F. I. Torquay, who have been spending their final leave in the diotrict. The evening was spent in dancing, interspersed witli vocal items, the danco music being provided by local talent. On- bo-half of the residents of tho district. Councillor F. J. Lemon, chairman of the local Patriotic. Committee, presented. both men with revolvers, and referred to tho high regard in which, tliey were hold.

Lance-Corporal F. Wood, of tho Fourteenth Reinforcement, who wis down on [ final leave, wo 3 presented with a. set of mili- | tary brushes, pocket-book, eoldier'a writing outfit, and shaving set, from his numerous friends in ChristchuTcli, prior 'to his returning to camp on Saturday night. i-'iivatce J. MacFurlajie. J. Ccstello, and C. Eriokson, who are on tneir final leave, were fare welled by tho residents of Mason's Flat on Friday evening. Notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather, there was a large attendance. Mr W. Anderson, on behalf of the residents., presented each with a set of military brushes, which were handed to them by ilia 9 Wright.' Mr Anderson, in his remarks, feelingly called to mind tho deaths of two young men who had spent many happy evenings in tho sanao building, viz., Privates F. Lulcey and R. Lusk, who had laid down their lives in tho defence of their country.

A farewell social was tendered by the residents of Balcoirn to Privates C. Fitzpafcrick and J. Carroll, who are leaving with the next Reinforcements. Mr J. Noble, chairman of_ tho Patriotic Committee, presented each soldier with a case of pipce nnd a tobacco pouch. Cr. Rowe, on behalf of tho Sefton Sports Club, presented Private Fitzpatrick with a foiintain pen. A to farewell Messrs G. B. Fisher, S. Kerr, and A. Munro, who are leaving for Tronthnm, also to welcome liome Private N. McKie. was held in tho Library Hall. Waiau, on Friday -evening, when, in spito of the heavy rain, tho building waa crowded. Mr F. S. Northcoto occupied the chair. The Rev. 1\ J. Smith delivered a stirring speech, which was much appreciated. Referring to Private McKis. who had already done his "bit." Mr Smith hoped he would soon bo restorod to his former health. Tho Rev. J. H. Thomson, in precenting tlie "beys," on behalf of the residente of Waiau, with a pocket wa-llat and a Testament each, said ho felt sure they would follow the noble example eet by the Anzacs.
