ITALY AT WAR.

THE AUSTRIAN

ADVANCE

SUCCESSES IN THE CENTRE

ITALIANS HOLDING BOTH WINGS.

;By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.)

(Received May 29th, 8.50 p.m.)

ROME, May 29

The Austrians have achieved a substantial success on their centre since the Italians have abandoned their main line on the Arsiero-Asiago plateau. The Austrians have nearly reached Posina, and arc closing in upon Arsiero, where they claim to have captured an armoured work on the northern outskirts of the. town.

The Italian situation on the wings is, however, very satisfactory. The Austrians hare suffered terrible losses in their attacks upon the Italian left wing, especially at Zugna Torta and Coni Zugna.

The Austrians are utilising fifteen divisions of troops in their offensive on the front of 50 miles between Lake Garda and.the Brcnta. The nature of the country does not permit of a continuous line of trenches. The chief handicap of the Austrians is the lack of railways and good roads.

Arsiero is deserted, but intact. The people in the Vicenza district are calm

and confident. Italian soldiers arc massing everywhere. Arsiero is a small town in the Lessino Alps, on a branch of the Astico river, 20 miles north-north-west of Yincenza. Asia-rc. the capital of the Set to f'<>muni. is on a branch of the Hrcnta river, eleven miles of Arsiero. and 23 miles north of Yincenza. Posina, on the eastern slopes of Mount. Pasubio. is six miles west of Arsiero. Zu<zna Torta is on the Adige. in the Lajrarina Yalley, about live miles south of" Kovereto. DAYLIGHT SAYING. ADOPTED IX ITALY. ROME. May Italy will adopt daylight saving on June ft til.
