OFFICERS' KITS.

STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER

The practice adopted by the Defence authorities in supplying officers' kits, was stated by the Defence Minister on Friday:—"A man who gains his commission by promotion through the noncommissioned ranks will jjet his allowance at once. Officers going into camp •with a probationary commission, mostly men on the Unattached B List, have to wait a month for their allowance, this being the period during -which they are on trial. The reason for the rule is that, we cannot be sure that men with probationary commissions will prove suitable, and untii we are sure of them wp cannot buy kits for them. This does not apply to the men who have come from the ivon-commissioned ranks, because we have already tried onghly, and Te know them."
