The" Martian—St. Regis fillv, Lov-ely Night, won another race in South Wales on February 29th. This was the Novice Handicap at Menanglo Park, in which she was favourite, and beat sixteen other runners.

At the Ascot Races (N.S.W.) on February 20tii, tho Achilles —Celaeno filly, Jiriseis, again scored. Starting an odd.s-on favourite in the Flying Handicap, she h::d no trouble in defeating ten others, to all of whom except one she was conceding weight. Mr Charles .Morgan. a well-known trotting enthusiast, died in Christchurch on .Monday. A few days ago he entered the Hospital, and was operated on for appendicitis, and was aftenvardci reported to be progressing satisfactorily, nut <1 turn tor the worse came, and tie never rallied. 'fhe late Mr Morgan, who was about it (J years of age, was well knov.n in trotting circles on the West Coast, and will be remembered as having piloted the Reef ton-owned horses Peony and Voter K> their recent victories. Hib parents reside at Sydenham and lie also leaves two brothers and two sisters to mourn their loss.

A well-known and popular resi- ! dent of Poverty Bay in Hie person of -Mr M. Maher\ passed away at. the Uisborne Hospital on Sunday, at the ago <>1 !!i years. From Jiis early youth lie had been engaged among - horses, first being in tho sorvic.c of Mr Duncan Hepburn, as a trainer and jockey, and subsequently he rode and trained lor some of the leading sportsmen in New Zealand, including the laic Mr Allan McDonald, Mr D. McDonald, and Sir James Carroll To the last-named ho had acted as private trainer for a lengthy period, and he only relinquished that position owing to tho breakdown in nis health, wnich has had so unfortunate a termination. One of the best horses lie rode over hurdles was Catif, on which he Avon a hurdie racc at Hawke's Hav. putting up a record at that time for New Zealand over a mile and'three-quarters, running the distance in 3.17. He also trained Herculanium when he beat Waitiri at •Makaruka, the latter being-barred on the machine. Old-time frisborne sports will remember a match that created a lot of interest at . the time between Disturbance (ridden by Maher) and Catif (ridden by I>. J. liarry), one mile over fences, for £25 a bide, the former winning. T-he best-horse the deceased trained was Mahutongn, who ran second in the New Zealand Cup, and then went to Auckland and won the Auckland Cup, carrying Bst 121b, also winning the C.J.C. Winter Cup 9st 101b, and Metropolitan Handicap Bst, and numerous other races for Sir James Carroll. Maher possessed a very fine disposition, and had a good word for everyone, and was very well liked: trainers throughout the Dominion who knew him always had a good word for Mick. The family will havo tho sympathy of a larjje number of 1 sportsmen.
