ROLL OF HONOUR UNVEILED
I There was a goad attendance at tho Papanui School on Saturday afternoon on the occasion of the unveiling of the 1 Roll of Honour of Papanui boys either 1 gone to the iront— unfortunately having been killed —or going. I Mr H.. Hookbam, % chairman of the sihool committee, hoped that the list would bo an incentive to those remaining to follow in their footsteps. Mr C. H. opie ■in feeling terms referred to the anxiety of parents, when their sons went, ■ but whatever they had gono through, they would do so again, on account of the magnificence of tho task they were called upon to perform. He suggested that a national .List of Honour be compiled* and he felt that it was due to the teachers that our boys were so patriotic, so brave, and so unselfish. Mr it. W. Hawke said that' as a member of the AVaimairi County Council'he had had to interview some,3oo parents of those who had not offered their services. The Rev. W. H. Orbell made a feel-' ing reference to the late Captain-Chap-lain Grant, and paid a tribute to one who set an example of loyalty and bravery, and who fifteen years ago at i Leeston had spoken on a somewhat similar occasion. He was then speaking to the Junior Cadets—they who to-day bad come to be soldiers "of tho | King, and who caught from the Rev. | Mr Grant the same spirit and by him were inspired with that bravery which j bad made their name. \ Mr G. Witty, M.P., gave a patriotic speech, and then removed the Union Jack from the new Honours Board and read the following names, those of the five who. had fallen on the battlefield being read out while the audience stood bareheaded: — Burgess R. The National Anthem was then sung, afternoon tea was served (*j- the ladies, and the function closed. . During the afternoon patriotic selections were given by the New Brighton Scouts' Fife and I>rum Band, under Bandmaster McCree and the schoolghk. under Miss Struthene. contributed the "Marseillaise 1 ' and other patriotic songs. • :
