+ Irp.tss ASSOCIATION TE7,EGE.VM.I AUCKLAND, February 11. ■ Arising out of a recent seizure of a large quantity of hop beer, Inuea and : Co., of Hamilton, were fined £30 and i £-t> Ss Gd costs for a breach of th-° i Finance Act, ;n that they brewed b?er without having kept a brewer's book. An analysis showed that the hop beer by defendant langed from 3.G to (J..'s'j per cent, proof spirit, consequently it wa-; held to bo beer, and subject to the duty. Defendants at- ' tributed the excess ot alcohol to the use i ret; sugar instead cf saccharine, v. hich. t):ey stated, it was almost impossible to obtain on account of the A\ai, i\. be'.iig chiefly a German rnanuTaciitre.
