SOCIAL TO RETURNED SOLDIERS.

A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING.

At the Art Gullery last evening an informal and successful social evening -was tendered to the returned men from Gallipoli by a committee of ladies styling themselves -the "An'zac Party," under the presidency of Dr. Ethel Sands. There was a splendid attendance, about forty returned men, in addition to many prominent citizens, including Mrs G. E. Rhodes, the Soldiers' Queen, appropriately attired in nurse's uniform, settling down to a full evening's enjoyment. Everything had been provided for their amusement. Card tables had been set out, cigarettes, sweets; and light refreshments provided, and the main gallery had been arranged as a. drawing-room, wliero on a raised platform a band, under the leadership of Mr C. "Wells, dispensed music, and in addition vocal items were given by various ladies and gentlemen. Th© card room, appropriately beflagged, -was also used for various games, guessing competitions, and for-tune-telling by Mrs Valiance. . Everything was carried off in a highly Buooeeeful manner, and the -informality of the gathering appreciably - added to its enjoyment, the majority of the men . being heartily tired of formal evenings which ara so reminiscent of parades. The "Anzao Party" of ladies, though only recently formed, with the idea, of catering for the social side of returned men, announce their intention of continuing tiiis good work, and many more delightful like evenings may be looked forward to. The party, comprising in addition to the president. Dr. Ethel Sands, include Mrs Cross, Mrs Cecil Louisson (treasurer), Mrs O'Loughlin, Mrs Thornhill Cooper, Sirs Cclonna, Mrs Ehrenfried, Mies M. Trent, Miss Dawe, Miss Shirtcliffe, Mrs G. Clarkson. Mrs Keane, Miss Guadersen, and Mre J. E. Evajis, are to be congratulated on their enterprise, «.nH can assured of their future succcsb in thie work.
