A NEW ZEALANDER'S VISIT. (press association telegram.) WELLINGTON, January 31. Dr. Adams, Astronomical Observei for tho New Zealand Government, re turned by the Maitai after a year': residence at tho famous Lick Observa tory, California. He will prepare i report for the Government. The obser vatory is 4200 feet up in the mountains and curing the winter the <:old is suffi cient to-burst tho water pipes. It hat a telescope 57 feet in length and 31 inches in diameter. Dr. Adams's visi' was to mako himself acquainted witl an astronomer's work, and to observi how they specialised in various branches On Saturday night the place wa: thrown open to the public, and lines o motors might be seen climbing the hill As many as 300 people often visit it As to the opinion of the" staff on thi moon and the planets, Dr. Adams sai( that the observers were very discreet and avoided theories, and only recoi-de( fact's. Tho observatory was like a' lac tory. working to a set routine day an< night. The doctor also visited the Mt Wilson Observatory, six thousand lee up, where they had a telescope with i hundred-inch reflector.
