ANOTHER PROHIBITION. V EXPORT OF TALLOW. (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.) MELBOURNE, January 36. The export of tallow from Australia without a permit from the Minister of Customs is prohibited. TRADE WITH RUSSTA. MELBOURNE, January 2G. The Russian Trade Commissioner in Australia has asked for an extension of the "favoured nation treatment" to Russia. Mr Tudor promised to do everything possible to establish direct trade with Russia.
TOO OLD. A DISAPPOINTED RECRUIT. (Received January 26th, 10.35 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Januaiy 26. Mi 4 Hlampson offered himself for any service at the front. The ago limit was, however, fatal to the acceptance of his offer. A message from Melbourne on Tuesday said: —"At a recent public meeting, Mr Hampson, Federal Member for Bendigo, stated that his son, who was in New Zealand, refused to enlist. He read a letter he had written to his son, saying: 'As you have failed to do your duty, I will take your place.' „Mr Hampson to-day carried out his intention and enlisted.''
SECOND WAR LOAN. A SATISFACTORY RESPONSE. MELBOURNE. January 26. The Treasurer has expressed satisfaction with he response to the; appeals for subscriptions to the second Commonwealth War Loan. ON THE LAND. SOLDIERS' PREFERENCE. SYDNEY, January 26. Cards circulated among the soldiers show that 17 per cent, prefer to settle on the land alter the war.
FOOTBALLER ENLISTS. January 26. Mr Frank Kelly, the well-known New Zealand League footballer, haa enlisted.
