ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.

The mouthly meeting of the Council of the North. Canterbury Acclimatisation Society was held last evening, Mr W. H. Tkdall, vicepresident, Uiing in the chair, and there was a Rood attendance. The for Internal Affairs wrote stating that Mr P. J. Do La Cour had be on appointed as a ranger under the Animals Protection Act, to enable him to exercise supervision over the Horseshoe Lake sanctuary. Mr De La Cour said he bed been asked by Mr. H. G. Ell, M.P. to act as ranger. The appointment wae approved. The Under-Secretary for Internal Affairs wrote, forwarding a- list oi New Zealand bird 6 not deemed to be protected during 1916.' and pointing out that hawks were hot included among the birds named, and they were therefore now protected. Mr Hardcastle explained that the proposed protection of liawks probably arose through a protest by the Farmers' Union against tlie wholesale slaughter of hawka by tho Otago Acclimatisation . Society. Mr Shand' proposed, Professor Blunt seconded. that protection should not be placed upon hawks in North. Canterbury. The motion was ■ agreed to. Mr Lavery moved, and Mr Knight seconded, that Horseshoe Lake be opened for fishing with rod and line. After a discussion the matter was referred to the • Garden Committee to report at next meeting. The Deer Committee recommended that eight b'cenees to shoot stags in Ihe Rakaia Gorge herd be applied for, and that the number of beads, allowed to each stalker be increased from two to • three. The report was adopted. The Curator reported that there were seven hens sitting on pheasants' eggs, and he hoped for better results from these. One of the pea liens woe still sitting, and the three young ones previously hatchsd out were still living, as were three young black teal..The acquisitions to the Gardens were four wekas from Mr W. Mcintosh, Whiterock. The report wa6 adopted. The Garden Committee reported npon routine. matters that had been referred to them, and their report wae ndoped. Accounts to the amount of £"32 14s id were parsed for payment. The Council went into committee, and on resuming adjourned.
