PRIZES FOR PATRIOTIC ESSAYS. (FROII OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) LONDON, December "Chart and Compass," for November —tho official organ of the British and Foreign Sailors' Society—contains tho following of interest to New Zealand scholars: — 1 EaCli year the British and Foreign Sailors' Society offers handsome copper plaques for the children of New Zealand schools for -the be?t cssavs ou a given topic. The Minister of* Education for the Dominion arranges the competition, and prescribes tho rules. The subject for 1913 was "To show iu the great war of 1914-15 what the British Empire owns to-its sailors, both, iloval and Mercantile." I'our plaques wero offered, and are now awarded to a boy and girl, both in the North Island and in the South Island. Ihe adjudicators have just finished the pleasant' task of reading through nearly eighty essays, and have made the following awards: — North Island l^y—Arnold Taylor, hangapara School, Great Barrier Island North Island girl—Ruth Ellen Speight, Petane School, Hawked Bav. South Island boy—Harold Woolf. West Ghnstchurch District High School. South Island girl—Hilda Marv Florence Valentine, Girls' High* School, Xtinaru.
Amonc those highly commended are: Dons Blyth (District High School, lerauka), Louise St. John (Girls' fecbool, Timaru). 0 All tho essays revealed a verr hi c h standard oi intelligence. The subject for next year's •competition is ' Draw a map of the World, and anticipate the changes that will be made b r Britain and her Allies iu consequence of _their being victorious."
