CASUALTIES.
FATAL FALL FROM A DRAY. The Coroner, Mr-.H. W. Bishop, held an enquiry yesterday into the circumstances attending the death of John James Hewitt, a widower, 50 years of age, ' who died As a result of injuries received through .being run over by a dray at- Sydenham on Monday. j James Watson Hunter, a draper, who witnessed the accident, said, that while cycling towards town about a quarter past 12 yesterday he saw deceased driving' a horse and,, drav approaching Waltham road. The horse seemed restive, and taking the rains to hit the horse, deceased somehow lost his footing and slipped down between the horse's hindquarters and the front wheol the dray, the" wheel passing over his body. The hcrse then bolted, leaving defeased lying in tho road. Witness ran up to him and tried to assist linn, but he was helpless. He was removed to the Hospital immediately. I>r. G. McDiarmid, house-surgeon at the Hospital, _ who attended deceased, said that when admitted he /vns suffering from marked shock, bruises, extensive fracture of the pelvis attended by .serious hemorrhage. Death was due' primarily to shock, assisted by the haemorrhage. Mr Bishop returned a verdict that deceased was accidentally killed by being run over by a dray. An inquest on the body of Henry John Joseph Noel Jennings, a farmer residing at East Oxford, who committed suicide on- Monday' by shooting himself, was held by Mr T. A. If. Bailev. S.M., a verdict being returned that Jennings committed, the deed whilst tomporari'r insane.
FOUND DROWNED
The body of Miss Emily Early, who had. been missing, from Oxford sinco Saturday, was found, oil avsand-spit in the rivor, about two and a half miles below- tho Waimakariri Gorge, bridge, at 4 p.m. yesterday, by a search party of- Waddiugton -residents. The deceased, who was the daughter of a wellknown Green dale farmer.'had been actin u as houseireeiier for her brother, a fattier on the "Warren Estate. Oxford. She went iitto the township on Saturday to do soTur> shopping, and was not seen alive again. On Monda-r morning her horse and gio; wem found tied to a po?t near the Waimakariri Gorge bridge. :
(fuess association* telegram.) ATJCKLAXO, January 11. A yonne: woman. Miss Gelda Summers. while leaning out of an office window, overbalanced and fell through a skylight on to th«* pavement a distance of about 20ft. She suffered a fractured skull and internal injuries. She is unconscious, and her condition critical.
