DRUNKENNESS,
Three male first offenders, for having been found drunk, were each fined ss, in. default 24 hours' . imprisonment. | Mary Cuthfield and May Boulton,. sec- i ond offenders were each -fined 10s,; in default 48 hours' imprisonment. | Herbert Nolan, a third offender, was j sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment. For having been found drunk, and also ] for casting offensive matter on the footpath in Victoria street, Thomas Edwards, alias Edlin, was on the first charge fined 10s, in default 48 hours' imprisonment, and on the second charge j he was fined 10s. VAGRANCY. Alexander Gilchrist and Daniel Carney, who arrived in town on Saturday and got too much liquor, pleaded guilty to a charge alleging that they were rogues and vagabonds, in that ' they were found without lawful excuse on the premises of Messrs Andrews and Beaven on Sunday morning. They were severqly cautioned, and were convicted and discharged. Adam Edgar and Patrick Hanlon entered pleas of guilty to charges of having been found by night without lawful excuse on the premises of the Kaiapoi Woollen Company, Manchester street. They ascribed their wrongdoing to over-indulgence. His Worship cautioned them and convicted and discharged them. OBSCENE LANGUAGE. Elizabeth Blythe acknowledged that she was drunk in Sydenham on New Year's Day, but when charged with having used obscene language on the gume occasion, she remarked that sho was exceedingly sorry, but had no recollection of having used the words set but on the charge sheet. -She was convicted charge of drunkenness. and sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment on the more serious charge. REMANDED. George Devell (Mr Malley) was charged with "having been found drunk and' also with having, on New Yeaf-'a Day, assaulted Patrick O'Connor and with having robbed him of £9.—-On the application of Senior-Sergeant Mathieson a remand till Friday was granted. An application by Mr Malley for bail was relused. Patrick O'Connor, on a charge of drunkenness, was also remanded till Friday. lyttelton. (Before Mr F. W. Anderson, J.P.) DRUNKENNESS. -One first offender was convicted and fined os. George O'Sbfea was fined a similar amount. William Wilson was ccnvicted and sentenced to fourteen days.' imprisonment, being refused the option of a fine on account of his excessive drinking habits of late.
CIRCUS HANDS IMPRISONED. (press association telegram.) DUNEDIN, January 3. There was a serious disturbance in Walker street on New Year's Eve. it was caused in the first place by some circus hands insulting a Syrian woman. This resulted in four of the circus employees appearing in the Police Court" to-day on various charges, including assault and obscene language. The oharge against one man was dismissed, but the other three each received three months' imprisonment, Mr J, R. Bartholomew, S.M., characterising their conduct as blackguardly.
