A. SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. The incidents of Dunsnndel and the •unrounding district hold a most eucccaelul iete in tlw .Domain on Saturday in aid of the Canterbury Patriotic Fund. Preparations for the gathering had been in x>rogress for about t'.vo montba, arid a strong committee, with the Kev. J. S. Heid ae iota secretary, and Mi H. A. Sally, cocoa-nut shy, guessing and other competitions, and there were stalls for the Bale of refreshments, sweets, fruit, soft drinks] flowers, produce, etc. The stallholders were:—Refreshments, Me?damos Wraight, C. A. Wright, Stringer, Smith, H. Brown, S. McKenzie, and J as. Walker; jumble, flower, and cake stalls, Mesdames W. Walter, A. McPheraon, Tweedy, and Stapleton; fruit ar.d aoft chrink.'), Mrs Anderson and Miss Owcrs; sweets, Mrs Westenra; afternoon , tea, Brooksido ladies. The mock court, which was presided over by Mr F. W. Johnston, of Christchurcli,. provided a great, deal of amusement, besides being the means of raising something in the neighbourhood of £120. Several staiwart "policemen" scouted the grounds for likelylook in j "criminals," and, nocdlesa to say, a. good many'were found. v The- baby show drew abont thirty competitor«, all _ fine, healthy-looking children. Tho competition was decided by popular vote. A lady who claimed to bo able to read characters had x very busy time throughout the day, and incidentally raked in a. good many shillings. A party of local and visiting dancers, and a "piper from Christehurch, gave exhibitions o» Highland and other dancing, and the Southbridgo District -Band contributed a. programme of mueic. In th© evening a successful concert was held at the Town Hall. Though all the returns are not yet availably it is estimated that the proceeds ctf tho fete will amount to somewhere between £400 and i»00.
