ELLESMERE BOATING CLUB.
CARNIVAL AT LAKE ELLESMERE,
The Ellesmere Boating Club held its first carnival at the Fishermen's Point, Lake Ellesmere, on IJew Year's Day, and the euc--OC6a that attended the gathering ma-kee it almost certain that it will become an annual affair. Although, the . carnival had been arranged at very short .notice, there was -an attendance of about five hundred people, and a meat enjoyable day was spent. Frequent trips -were run on the lake by the following motor launch owners, and the proceeds amounted .to .£lO Ss^9d;—Messrs H. J. Collins, T. H. Overton, Vi r . Lara bio, Craven, F. Alexander, Young, R. M. Taiaroa, W. Quigiey, and J. Vinoe. The handicspping was done by members of the comm:ttc3, and the finishes of most of the events wero very close and .exciting. An exhibition, of surf toboganning given by Messrs F. -.exander and F. W Bowes created a. great deal of amusememt. r At the close of the day tho prizes were presented by Mrs Overton. J.he Canterbury Patriotic -Fund will benefit to th« extent .of JE22. There is already some talk of holding another carnival ai Easter.

Motor-boat Racc. final; Bsrcola tronhy Aoransri 1, laa 2. Won by a' few inches. Double Sculls, in- punta; MY R. jr. Taiaroa'a trophy; 250yds—R. M. Taiaroa l! Ebert 2.
Single Sculls, in mints; Major Overton's trophy; 150 yds— G. Taiaroa 1.
Boys' Rowing Race, under 15 years; Mr I. McGill's trouliy; 100yds—H. Overton 1. Sailing Race; Invader trophy; one. mile—■ T. Stratz3's Topnino 1. Swimming Race. 100yds—Kirk 1.
