WOMEN AND CONSCRIPTION.

TO THE EDITOP. OF "THE FEESS." Sir, —As a married woman, I read with, groat satisfaction in this morning's ''Press'" J. Philip Barber's letter. I myself, and also many people, think conscription is by far the fairest thing, both to the men fighting, the ones who have .so nobly volunteered, also the women left behind, and I am sure all fionest-minded people think so, and Dr. -UcXab is quite" right in his article sayin« that men are hanging back for conscription. "Why should the shirker get off while the honest hard worker goes and fights for leaving his loved ones to look and fight for themselves at home, and no doubt snubbed by those same shirkers? Ts it not the fairest to women, they taking their lot more checrfully? Also, it would bring a great blowing about amongst us in sympathising one with the other. The voluntary system gives much scope for harmful chatter that So-and-so was not happy, and numerous different causes. Under conscription, if a woman lost her husband it would bo a great consolation for her to know that her husband did not desert her. lam fully aware the anguish and misery this war rause-;, my husband losing his oniy brother, while my brother and two nephews, besides cousins, are at the front, so I shall not encourage my husband to or,list (who is very keen himself) until T sec more fairness, which is couKcriotion.—Yours, etc.. M. J. S. IJ-jconibcr 13th.
