Tho second of the series of patriotic, earnivuls in aid of the Peninsula War Funds Appeal was held in Akaroa today, -when Akaroa borough and its ' direct surroundings held their fete in j aid of the Fund. The "weather was extremely warm up to 3 p.m., when a ! severe .southerly Miuall sprang up, and j threatened the demolition of the stalls, j Fortunately, however, it soon passed : off, and left the atmosphere much cooler. The attendance was good, : though practically confined to Akaroa residents. The reccints amounted to £3-K), which will go to swell the Peninsula quota of the. Canterbury Patriotic Fund. !Much sympathy was expressed during the day with the Mayor (Air 0. Armstrong) on account of the loss of his son, wno died of enteric at Malta. In consequence of his bej reavement, Mr Armstrong tcok no ar--1 tive part in the proceedings. The stalls'and tho takings thereat were as under:—
