At the Tiallarat Meeting on Derombcr Ist and 2nd. Mr F. J. Mitchell's six-yoar-old gelding El Bro, by Soult from Momi. by llotchkiss from First. Love, by Nordenfeldt. won three races. The Railway Handicap on tiic «econd day of the recent Ballarat Meeting wn.s .started eighteen minutes before the appointed time. As no objection was made by the owner of the second horse, the stewards allowed tho race to stand, but lined tho starter .Co.

llonorine, by Soult from Czarcvna, therefore, full sister to Anna Carlovnn, won the Welter Handicap, of £100. seven l'urlongfi, nr. the Mcntouo Meeting on December 6th. Tho well-known old performer Enc shattered his off front pastern after going about half a mile in tho Kosohill December Handicap, and was pulled up. He was subsequently destroyed. Lric, who was twelve years old, was by Sir William from Heather, and had done a lot of racing, his wins including City Tattersnll's Handicap, A.J.C AVaverley Handicap, \Villiamstown King's Birthday Handicap, Hawkesbury Spring Handicap, AjJ.C. Metropolitan. Warwick Handicap (twice), Hawkeabury Autumn Handicap, and ilosehill Handicap.

Work at Riccarton yesterday morning was for tbe most part uninteresting. Tho plough track upon which all tho work was done had received a very liberal quantity of water overnight, and good tunes in the couple of instances .m which fast work were indulged in, .was out.Of tbc.quejs.tipn. ..."Warstep and Snub got to the endSif a gallop over a mild and a quarter satisfactorily. Tho first half-mile was run a leisurely pace, but from then on the pair increased tho pace, and both were running on well at tho finish. Their stable companion, Wardanccr, also got through useful .work. The Chokebore Lodge team, which leaves for Auckland to-day, as do Mr C. G. Dalgety's trio/ were all given good three-quarter pace work. Country Belle, tho winner of tho New Zealand Trotting Cup, is ta be retired to "the stud, and tho Now Brighton Frco for All on Saturday will probably ; mark her last appearance on tho race-track. Her owner, Mr W, J. Morland, is, however, anxious to give her an opportunity to take a fast record for a mile, and she will make an attompt to set up new figures-for that distance on the Metropolitan Trotting Club's, track early this morning. Tho following officials have been arranged for:—-Starter, Mr J. H. Tompkins; judge, Mr W. G. Garrard; timekeepers, Messrs K. Clarkson, R. Wallace, ADickson, R. J. Munro, and F. Holmes. Tho present milo record is 2min 8 3-5 sec, held jointly by Enimclinc and King Cole. Bradbury, who won the Champagne Stakes at Brisbane the other day. is the colt by Bczonian from Mallaig. for whom Mr lan Duncan got 300 guineas I at the Svdney sales last April; ■ Mallaig is bv Clanranald from Hanpv Valley, by "Wallace (son of Carbine) from Faraway, by Bill of Portland (imp.) from Happy Land, by Musket from Atlantis (imp.), bv Thormanby. Happy Land was a half-sister to St. Leger. She is also the dam of Hova. Regained, and United States (sire of Uncle pain). When the St. Albans Stud was sold in 1900 Mr W. Glasscock bought Farawav, with Happy Valley at foot, and in foal again to "Wallace, for 240 euineas. He ww acting, for ..MrJ. F. Reid. Faraway bred seven fillies, but they have done very little at the stud, no big winners being bred from them. Tho Summer Meeting of tho Now Brighton Trotting Club will commence to-day, and, judging by the fields | engaged, the racing should bo .full "of interest. During the patt few months j the olub ha* made many improvement ß , I chiefly in providing more nccommodaI tion tor thu general public, while additional horse-boxes liavo also been erected. A .new and up-to-date totalisator house, has been erected m | the inside enclosure, and a new stand i has been built for stewards and officials. Special trams will run at short intervals, the first race commencing at 12.30 p.m. Engaged in . tho principal event of the day, the Maco Memorial Handicap, ore wreral useful horses. j'randocia. who has disappointed his connexions of late, will need tp.be at his best to win from scratch, while the dispiavs given by Wallace "Wood, Jack Asbo're, Red Mac. Little Kauri, and Antonio of late do not recommend them as likely to give much trouble. That verv promising three-year-old, Cello Svdney A\ like*, its stepping well in bis work, but hi* staying capabilities are yet to be proved. Tiie New Brightou Derby winner, Prince -Akwood, will be a warm favourite, and his display will be watched with much interest. Minstoa will have a large following, and should be in the tiring-line towards tho finish. Little Tib has been responsible for some good work lately, and in face of tho brilliant mile ho ian at the November Meeting, is nicely handicapped. Princess Sherwood read* well with 3soo off the limit, and the way she won the November Handicap (i n saddle) at tho last Metropolitan Meeting, suggests that she has only to repeat her form to keep all the opposition busy. Of the remaining five the AHhburton leprfsentativp,. Evelyn, who was sucressful m tins race inst year, looks the best.
