THE CALL TO ARMS.

* rELEVENTH REINFORCEMENTS. CHRISTCHLTvCH QUOTA LEAVES. A FULL MUSTER. • Christchurch was able to despatch to Trcntham last night a complete quota for the Eleventh Reinforcements, for though the Infantry were one or two short, there was .1 slight counterbalancing surplus in the .Mounted Rifles. It not till late yesterday afternoon that the full quota was secured, and then though a lew men failed to answer their names when the roll was called, a couple of the branches were over strength, arid men reported themselves at the last moment, and intimated their desire to leave -with tho quota that night. The following table shows the quota asked for in each branch of the Service, the number called tip. and the number who responded to the roll-call: — Quota Number Number reBranch. ask.»d for. notified' tponded. llcunU-d Eiflss .. 35 .13 39 Artillery 15 1G 16 Enginceui .. Taken as a collective whole, the quota comprised an excellent body of met., whicn compared more than favourably with soino previous contingents.

Before they left the Barracks tho men were farewelled by tho Mayor (Mr H. Holland) on behalf of the citizens. He was jjlad to see that Christchurch had performed its duty and provided a full quota. As far as the Canterbury military district, however, was concerned, it was a shocking thing that whereas 50,000 men had intimated in their National Registration papers that they were willing to enlist, the district's quota for the Eleventh Reinforcements iva s 179 short. He did not know the cause of this; some people, said it was the Christmas holidays] but in such a crisis as was at preselnt existing, holidays should not detor| a man from himself at his country's service. In connexion with j Christmas, his Worship assured the men that they would not be forgotten, as 300 puddings, for them had been ordered (cheers), and would be sent to them, together with plenty of peas and new potatoes. (More cheers.) He hoped in future there would be no shortages as far as Canterbury was concerned. He had a considerable interest in the men leaving that night, as his youngest son was *ja. member of the party. In conclusion, his Worship expressed the conviction that the ultimate victory in this war was going tr> be won by the men not in khaki at the present time.

Escorted by tho Citizens' Defence Corps, with its band, and the Christchurch Cadet Buglo Band, the Elevenths, under the charge of Lieutenant Livingstone and Sergeant-Majo.-s Jordan and Smith, marched to the Christchurch railway station, where they boarded a special train for Lvttelton. The streets were well lined with spectators, who gave the men a hearty farewell. Outside the station there was a specially larse crowd, and the Madras street bridge was also thronged. A special train-from Timarti conveyer! the South Canterbury quota of tho Eleventh Reinforcements, under cbnrgc of Captain Chapman and S2rpeantMajor Hollands. Thev reported a shortage of 43.
