PRIZE DISTRIBUTIONS.

4 MISS DIGBY'S COM3IEECIAL SCHOOL. The annual prize distribution in connexion with Misa Digby's Commercial School took placo in the Alexandra. Hall last night. Tho Mayor (Mr It. Holland) presided, and the lia.ll was filled with past and present pupils. The annual report was rood as follow?:— The school year just ending shows an excellent record of work done and results achieved by pufils. The number of students attending both tha day and evening commercial classes has again b?en larger than that for any previous year, while the bucccb»?s of students at the various examinations for winch they have cutAed have been highly satisfa-c----tory. As the result of the Government Entrance Examination for shorthund-typistes, heJd last. May, live Christchurch candidates euccreded in passing in both shorthand and typewriting, which is essential in order to obtain Government appointments, and four of th?3o wero pupils of our school, who obtained first, second, fourth, and fifth places on tho Christchurch list of passes, ©tie of our successful candidates, in open competition with 126 candidates, from all over New fcaland, heaelcd tho list of passes, while at the examination held the previous November ona of our students also achieved tho distinction of obtaining first place for the whole of New Zealand out of a total of 154 candidates. Eighty-fivo shorthand speed and theory certificates have been, granted to pupils during the year by Sir laaac. Pitman and Sone, and there are a L\rr»o number of examination papers for which tho results have not as yet come to hand. There ha-s again existed an exceedingly keon demand throughout -tho year for our «iudenfa to fill positions a.? flhorthaud-typiste3 and clerks. Over 250 appointments have been obtained by pupils tunc-e lust January, and this number would have been largely increased if we had had more pupils available to fill the many positions otl'.-rin;:. Owing to tho increasing scaicity of male clerks, consequent on the war, the sphere of the lady clek has been largely widened, and girls are now obtaining positions in banks a.nd other oiSces that have previously employed only male clerks. The Girls' Hockey Club in connexion with the echool has ha<l the most (successful year yet exprienosd in its history. Two teams were entered for the Canterbury Ladies' Hockey Association's competition, one each in the senior and junior grud<>. The senior team succeeded in winning both the «ix-n-side tournament cup. and also tho shield for the senior competition, while four of the club'a players were included in the Canterbury representative team which represented th-9 province at the New Zealand Ladies' Hockey Association's annual tournament held in Wellington. The junior team was composed mainly of new players, but they made excellent progro» in the game during the s?ason, and gained a large amount of experience, which ehoiild stand them ;u good stead during next year's competitions. The school girls, by "old girls" of the school, held a very successful "Flower morning" in September Itst, in aid of tho Wounded Soldiers' Branch of tho Patriotic Fund, and by the sale of flowers and sweets were successful in raising the •sum of £.">9.
