Tho secretary of tho Canterbury Autoraobilo Association haa received the following report from tho Dunsandel district regarding the condition of roads:—"Owing to continued dry weather nil tho roads in this district are beginning to break up. Part of crossing n Selwyn river-bed is very bad."
A lamp on a hoarding in Hereford street started a small fire last night, and an alarm was sent to the fire station, but tho application of a bucket of water before the brigade's arrival extinguished what littjo lire there was. Later in the evening the brigade turned out to an alarm from St. Albans, but it proved to be of the malicious falso type.
Yesterday the trolley pole of a double-decker car on the Sumner line came adrift from the overhead wire just on a curve. The Eole slashed up and down alarmingly etween the span wires and the guard, and as the outcome of its irresponsibility the guard was dented, some of the span wires damaged, and the polo itself bent into a very artistic double curve. Tho car was taken off the running when it reached town.
It is not often that men aro found as loquacious as the average woman is alleged to be, but a witness in the Magistrate's Court yesterday camo very near to filling tho bill. Mr Bishop, S.M., after hearing a lengthy explanation from the witness, remarked : "With a wife given to drink, and a man who can talk like that, I don't wonder that they don't get on." Mr Donnelly, who was cross-examining tho witness, wished to bo held guiltless, and said that he did not desire tho "flood of eloquence'' whicji had outpoured from the witness.
A boy about twelve years of atrc. wa s before Mr H. W. Bishop. S.M., in the Juvenile Court yesterday, charged with having stolen 'from tho dwelling of D. G. Maindonald, a leather purse containing £2 10s. « cheque for £3, and Is 6d in stamps, the propcrtv of Annette Marjorie Jacobs. The boy was previously before the Court on a charge of having stolen lollies, atid was ordered to report himself periodically to the Rev. F. Rule, but by some misunderstanding had faiiod to'do so. The Magistrate said that he would give tho boy one more chance, but if I:e came before the Court again he wonld be sent to an industrial school. He convicted tho boy and ordered him to report to the Rev. F. Rule once a week for •■'ix months.
A memorandum from the Minister in Charge of the Soldiers' Information Department, requesting the assistance/ or" technical colleges in the work of training invalided soldiers to their new occupations, evoked indignation at the Otago Education Board meeting yesterday (says a Press Association telegram), frc.ni tho fact that in the information attached was a report taken from a German paper relating to the measures taken in Germany. It was resolved to forward to the Minister and all technical school managers a resolution that the Board did not recognise tho necessity for enclosing an extract from a German paper giving the methods of administration and advice as to the treatment of disabled soldiers. At this period of the nation's liistory, it seemed to the Board a grave reflation on British humanity and patriotism and an insult to its national pride to suggest by forwarding such an extract that wo might take an example from Germany in tho proper and humane treatment" of our wounded heroes.
A Wellington message siates that the steamer Parattah. from New York, has wirelessed that she will arrive at Lyttelton to-day.. and proceeds thence to Dunedin and Melbourne.
The Niagara, which arrived at Auckland yesterday, brought in all -Ho bags of English and American mails for New Zealand. There were 157 bacs for Auckland, 159 for Wellington, and 14. for oilier centres.
Yesterday Mr J. R- Samson, oflicer-in-charge of the Government's Returned Soldiers' Department, visited Christchurch and conferred with Messrs J. M. "lurnbull and J. D. Millton, of the C.D.C.. in reference to the C.D.C. taking over from the Christchurch City Council tlie work of looking after discharged soldiers and acting as the responsible agents of the Department in Christchurelf.
Mr C. F. Thomas, manager of the Bank of New Zealand. Christchuich, has been appointed to control the new Trustee Department of the New Zealand Insurance Company, with headquarters at Auckland. This department lias l.ot been long established, and its activitv so far has been in the North Inland, but it is proposed to extend it.
A foreta.ste of the approaching feivtive Reason was given in tho MagisCourt yesterday, and temporarily brightened up the somewhat sordid character of the proceedings. A white-haired old man, a Dane, was applying for a maintenance order, and has been doing to for some time past, but matters have been delated owing to the failure of the Court officials at Dunedin to forward evidence taken m that city. In the circumstances MiBishop. S.M., adjourned tho application till after the holidays. As tho applicant v.a» on the point of leaving the Court he turned towards the bench and said : **I wish you a happy New Year." A smile went round the Court, and Mr Bisho;., in referring to tho old gentleman's courteous compliment, remarked that it, was seldom that 110 was wished a happy New Year in Court.
With regard to the Christmas entertainment 10 be provided for the wives and children of dead soldiers and soldiers at the front, Mr George Harper reported to the executive of the C.D.C. yesterday (hat the authorities of l-hrist's College had kindly lent tho use of the Coliego grounds and gymnasium for the occasion. 'the entertainment would be held on Thursday, December 23rd, stnrting at - p.m. Arrangements had been made for a Christmas tree, which wns being provided by Mr J. A. Young, of tlie Public Gardens. A marquee was also being secured, and rctrcshmentr; and presents for th? children being provided. The Christc-hurch Women's Branch of tho National Reserve were also assisting with the entertainment. Mr J. M. TurnbuU stated that Mesdames Boylo and Rhodes, who had held a similar function last Christmas, had offered to assist with the C.D.C. entertainment, and were, with Mrs TurnbuU, acting as the representatives of the C.D.C. Donations wore being received towards the entertainment. The smoke concert to the returned soldiers was placed in the charge of Mr Nat. Woods, who reported that he had collected £11 lis.
