RANGIORA HIGH SCHOOL.
MEETING OF HOARD OF GOVERNORS. The monthly meeting oi" the Rflngiora High School Board of Governors was held last night. Present: Messrs 11. Hall (chairman*, 11. Boyd, F. Horrell, C. W. Hell, 11. Collie. J. Marshall, ■-• Stevenson, and C. I. Jennings. The principal i.Mr I'. R. Cresswcll) also attended.
A circular was received from the Education Department regarding ropreseutations made by several secondary school Boards to the effect that owing to the impracticability at present of obtaining suitable assistant teachers for boys' :chou!s, they were unable, to comply with the requirement* of the proviso to tho 10th schedule of the Education Act referring to staffs and salaries, and asking for a relaxation of its conditions. The Department held it had no authority to vary the terms of tne Act, but it'recognised that under the exceptional circumstances, it was prepared to meet the Board in a spirit of icasonable compromise. It did not, however, feel justified in paying rates of capitation in excess of the amount paid out by the Board in salaries and incidentals during the war. The Department of Agriculture wrote statiug that arrangements had boon made with the Education Department on the subject ol agricultural experiments at schools generally, which would come into operation next season. In the meantime the Fields Instructor had been requested to assist the Rangiora High School this season, as in the past. A circular was received from the Discharged Soldiers' Information Department seeking assistance in the training of -wounded soldiers incapable* of following their former occupations. It was decided to reply that, whilst the Board was in sympathy with tho proposal, they could not give any practical assistance through the Teclinu?al School classes, which were attenacd only by bchool children. Tho principal reported that the effort made by the. pupils in aid of the Red Cross Fund resulted in JCI.jG 14r f»d being collected in sums of from Id to Is from over one tlwusand contributors. The expenses were nil. The treasurer's statement for tho month showed receipts £1.">8 Gs, expenditure C'2ll 8s 4d, credit balance £109 Ik.
