Many lovers, of gardens were much perturbed in reading the City Council's announcement yesterday ■ morning threatening legal proceedings "againr,t

persons found wasting water."

A representative of ''The Press" ascertained from the municipal water supply authorities that this threat does not, apply to persons who havo meters installed.'' and who use water "on their gardens which has passed through the meter.

The notice is designed to proven't city water being applied to gardens by means of hose in cases where, the water does not go through a meter. It is also -intended for irrigationists who may block up an ordinary drainage wimp, turn on tho taps and let the water overflow on to the garden, again without first going through u meter. Dripping- taps that are not seen to als > come within the scoiie of cause- of action in respect to waste of water.

The householder who draws off water and convey- it per watering-can or bucket to hi s parched garden will not be held to he wasting the necessary and precious liquid unless he is found putting the water en in quantities greater than, say, L'OO gallons weekly.

Regarding meters, the municipal water surm|v authorities have -not yet got .sufficient to satisfy the number of applicants who want them installed. It is competent tor any person, so desiring, to uct a meter from :\r,- other source, tho only condition being that the meter must be submitted to the municipal authorities for thorn to test it.

The minimum supo'y to each householder is 20,000 gallons I' 0'" annum; nil used in excess must be paid for. In the case of persons paving, say, 3"A per annum as water rate, their'allowance is 30,C00 gallons per annum; any used in excess is charged, for. No fewer than fifteen cases in which users are alleged to have wasted water are to come before the Court this week.
