Sir, — 1 trust you wiil allow me space in your valuable columns to protest against the prize-list that is being offered in connexion with tho Ro«* Show at thin Carnival. According to tho schedule I have just received by chance, a sum of ±T2" in cash prizes i» 1 being offered, and this at a patriotic gather- 1 ing. Surely at a time like the present, when we should ail i«o making gacriJicos, it should be sufficient to win in competition at u patriotic flower show without taking a prize at ail. 1 question if eo elaborate a prize-!is', has evci l-ecn offered in one day for a flower show in New Zealand. This is no time to throw money away. These carnivals, as a rale, are a I way 3 over, burdened with expenses. Tie last Rca# Carnival held in the Domain was a fitrikinj 'example, when, o'.lt ot receipt.* amounting to £7&2 tki, the huge sum of i'li9 0s Id waa eaten up ;n expenses. I trrst the Tliver Bank Carnivn: will not bo quite as bad .as this; but, judging by the prize-list offered at thi? Pose Slmw ihe < I'ht.w'.i will be hip:!, and it only want* a wet day to cawa one to think that other methods should be adopted to raise money. I consider that j ;»)1 this cor.tinu.i 1 l/eggir.i' should cease. The [ willing horse i< paving every time —that is, 1 tho P'X)r man. n-vor mind what function i* on i"* l ' patriot.c p'HT.oios. he is there with ' his few shillicz. l . The Government should take r!;is m.itter in hard at hnce. nnd im,l graduated ir.como las. This wil; :<a:ii shirker, ar,d I • -r.;ure to ely a sum <•" half a million could' !-<• raised in Canterbury yearly. I the Piver Bank Carnival will be a success, and that it is not too late to change the cash prizes for the FJoso Show into certincaWs. —Yours, e - 1 . TI*MBKELL. VETERANS' HOME FUND.
