- 1 ■ ■ V 1 STEPHEN PHILLIPS. (liy Cable.—Prese Association.—Copyright.) LONDON, Dccamber 0. The death is announced of Mr Stephen Phillips, poet, and editor of the "Poetry Iteview.'' Mr Stephen Phillips, who was born in 186J, near Oxford, was tho son of the Kev. Stephen Phillips, precentor of Peterborough Cathedral. Soon after leaving school ho went on tho stage, joining Mr F. It. Benson's company. His lirst publication was a volume of poems, with three other writers, in 18S0, but it was not until 1896 that be made a name. This was with "Christ m Haaes," which was received with a chorus of approval by leading critics. "Poems," published a year or so later, containing "Marpessa," added to his fame and his popularity. "Paolo aud Franc.-esca" (1599) was the first of a i series of blank verse dramas which were, j for poetry, widely read. One of*,the ' ablest of English dramatic critics described this version of the immortal love story ns "a tiling of exquisite poetic form, yet tingling'from first to last with intense dramatic life.'' "Paolo and Franceses,"' "Ulysses." and other plays of his. were successfully produced in England.
