' BANGIORA. I The fortnightly meeting of tho Rangiora Borough Council was held ' . last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr C. I.\ Jennings), Cub. H, Boyd, C. C. Pateraon, W. A. Rows©, W. Blackett, F, B.* Lane, C.. S. Ayree, and M. Mc- ' Graer. The .Mayor welcomed CV. W. A. Howes, a new member of the council. Cr.Bowse suitably replied. Leave of abscnce was granted Cr. W. Wright. • The Mayor referred to the death of ■■ -d Stopper Ales. Strong, who had been. - - killed in action at tho Dardanelles since ■ . last meeting. - A vote of sympathy was ' passed with Sapper Strong'o relatives. The Auditor-General wrote, referring to the robate allowed on last year's - rates, and it was decided to endeavour '•to collect the money from tho ratepayers who received the rebate. ' Tho Poor of Groat Britain, Ireland, 1 and Belgium Committee wrote, urging , the local bodies who were contributing their monthly quotas to the fund to cn- , deavour to persuade the other local bodies to contribute. A request was rcceivod from the Kowai Patriotic Committee to have a whole holiday declared on October 14th. The matter was referred to the Retailors' Association, which will meet on :Wednet>day u> consider the matter. .A report wa« received from the superintendent of tho Fire Brigade, relating •v to the claim made by Mrs Sutherland. It stated that none of the firemen was aware of anyone having met with an < ; s aocident on the occasion of the recent ' ' fire, and if so it was purely accidental. i It was decided to write to Mrs Sutherland regretting the aocident. 'I The "Works Committee reported that '■' they hail in>pected Seddon and Ayres t streets, and found them to be well t>- metalled and well graded. onded! "That the matter °f cutting back the trees on Air 'Bishop's property in Church street be held over till next meeting."—Agreed to. The Works Committee reported the need of & water-tank at the south end of . Victoria street for the purpose of watering the road. j Cr. Blackett moved, and Cr. Lano seconded: "That the Works Committee be asked for an estimate of the probable oost of the proposed work." The motion was agreed to. | Cr. Boyd, chairman 6f the Building , Committee, reported that tho committee was not in favour of granting permission to Mr O. Leech to repair tho building recently partly destroyed by fire. The report was adopted. The gas manager's report recommended that Mr James Rowe should be granted an increase in wages. On the motion of Cr. Boyd, seconded by Cr. Ayers, it was decided to grant an increase of 7s 6d per week.' The foreman's report stated that, a telegraph post in Victoria street was a danger to traffic, projecting 2}ft on the footpath. It was decided io write to the Telegraph Department, drawing attention to the matter. Cr. Ayers reported that it was the intention of the \ Works Committee to put the steam roller on to Ayrcs and Seddon streets as soon as tho roller was available. The financial statement showed receipts in general account £416 7s 3d, gas acoonnt receiots £200 16s sd, payments £139 7s 4d, leaving a debit balance of '£1559 Bs % 9d. Cr. Rowse gave notice of motion: "That all permanent workmen employed by tho Council should be granted six days' holiday annually on full pay." An invitation was received for tho Council to attend a memorial service at the Methodist Church on Sunday evening. On tho motion of Cr. McGruer. tho invitation was accepted. Cr. Rows© moved, and Cr. Ayres seconded: 'That the consideration of the schedule of duties of the borough foreman should bo postponed till Friday ne.vt." Cr. Boyd moved as an amendment. "That tho matter should bo postponed indefini+elv." Cr. Paterson seconded tho amendment. Cr. Blaclrett moved, and Cr. Rows© seconded: "That consideration of the matter be made at the next "ordinary meeting of the Council." This was agreed to.
