DOMINION DAY.

EIGHTH ANNIVERSARY

Tin; eighth anniversary of the declaration of New Zealand as a dominion in place of a coi.iny, will be celebrated on Monday. Tho Government, through the Minister of Education, having exprcßsed the wish that the day Bhould bo fittingly obserVed in tho public schools, the North Canterbury Education Board issued a circular to chnirmen of School Committees and headteachcrs, - from which tho following is extracted: —

"The Board suggests that arrangements should bo made for assembling the children at eleven o'clock in tho morning to salute the flag, when short addresses to tho children, reminding them of their privileges and duties aa citizens of the Dominion, would bo appropriate. Special refereuce might well be made to the crisis through which tho Empire is pissing, and to tho need for self-denial and help on the part cf school-children, who in many little ways can assUt in alleviating the hardships and sufferings of tho brave soldiers and sailor-; who are- dnilv risking their lives for our sofctv and freedom."

In some instances the object sought to he attained t>y the suggestions made by the Board has been reached by other methods. Yesterday afternoon in some of the city schools the different classes were addressed by the teachers on tho significance of Dominion Day. By this means the children will be able to tako full advantaae of the holiday granted them on Monday. On Tuesday morning they will be aslsfid to write compositions on Dominion Day, based on the addresses given yesterday.
