| 4 | MR. E. M. D. "WHATMAN. ' Tho death occurred at Russell, Bay ■' of Islands, on Tuesday, of Mr E. M. 13. ' Whatman, formerly of Masterton. Tho , deceased was born at Salisbury, Eng- • land, vears auo, and was a son of the I late Mr P. M. C. Whatman. There i was- no more prominent figure in Waij rarapa than tho late Mr W batman, 1 who.se sterling qualities and genial chari actor made him a host of friends. Ho 1 settled in Masterton with his brother, Mr A. I'. Whatman. 31 years ago. He j was a member of the old Masterton I Football Club, and was captain of tho | senior team some 25 years ago, when 1 it-ivas considered the'best team in the j North Island, and second only in New | Zealand to the Alhambra team of Dun!»cdin. Tho deceased captained the Masterton team in that memorable match at Dunediu 24 .years ago, when, in a contest for what was styled the championship of New Zealand, Alhambra j beat Masterton by 18 points to -1. Mas- ' torton's defeat was largely duo to tho | la.'l that they had had a hard game a few days l>efore, when they defeated ' Mcrivale, the champions of Canterbury. I The late Mr Whatman was one of tho finest forwards New Zealand has neon (savs the 'Wairarapa Daily Times"), ! and was a member of Harry Roberts's j Wellington representative team whichj playedStoddards English team. It was j in this match that Mr Whatman had a ; lon- broken. On the football field was ' reflected his private life—lie "played the same" all tho time. Deceased was a member of the Wellington Arclimai tisation Society, and took a keen interest in fishing and deer-stalking.
