EDUCATION BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING. The North Canterbury Education Board met yesterday. Present: Messrs Geo. Rennie (chairman), C. H. Opie, j W. H. Collins, W. A. Banks, H. Boyd, M. Dalziel, J. Jamieson, and T. W. Adams. Tho Appointments Committee reported that a- return had been prepared j showing that in over 50 cases in the district there wero teachers having charge, without assistance, of over 50 children. It was agreed to refer the , matter to the inspectors in order to discover whether it was not practicable _ to reduce the number so that no i teacher should ever be required to i teach more than 50 children. The > Board was also recommended to bring * the matter \inder tho notice of the _ Council of Education. The Buildings Committee also reported that a letter was received from the [ committee drawing attentiou to the |. inadequate accommodation at the Phillipstown School, already reported upon j by the inspector. It was agreed to I rent tho adjoining Sunday school build- , ing, if suitable and available. Failing . this arrangement, a temporary build- „ ing to be erected. A deputation from ' the St. Albans .School Committee wait- . Ed on the committee, with reference to the inadequate accommodation. It was agreed to proceed with the erection . of a shelter-shed, of dimensions to be > agreed upon with the committee, to '. be used for school purposes until the 3 end of the year, when the committee . would refund half the cost; tenders to _ he called for the. work. The School Committee, not being satisfied with the I proposed lavatory accommodation in s the front and side porches, the arcbi- . tect was directed to consider the ques- | tion of a separate building, and to mako - enquiry as t<> cost of electrical pump, [ in order to conserve the water supply. A letter was received from the Christ.- . church City Council, covering corres- . pondence with referene to tho proposed seed campaign, and suggesting that the school children should bo organised for she. purpose of growing and gathering grass seed. It was resolved that the Board approve of the efforts made to promote a seed campaign, and that a >Dv of the circular from the '"Auckland Weekly News'" be sent to each School Committeo. supplemented by any practical suggestions the Chief Instructor of Agriculture should see his way to make.
