WAR PENSIONS BILL.
CRITICISM IN THE HOUSE OF LORDS. LONDON, July 26. In the House of Lords, the Naval and Military War Ponsions Bill is being considered. Strong objection is taken to tho Government rushing so important a measure through. Tho main opposition centres round the proposal to create a new-statutory body with many now officials to administer the pensions. Lord Crowe pointed out tho urgency of the measure. Unless the roa-

A completo " separation sliould be made between tho ] permanent pensions and tho separation \ allowances.* Ho moved the adjournment of the Bill until after tho recess. Lord Lansdowno pleaded with tho Lords not to bring tho machinery to a standstill, and said that ho believed the policy would be universally approved by tho country. Lord Midleton, who is a member of tho Departmental Retrenchment Committee, said he did not desire to reject , the Bill, but ho earnestly desired to re- • cast the Bill. The adjournment was carried by 44 votes io 31. ! A HEALTHY ARMY. A committee of the Privy Council, -hich will bo advised by scientists, has been appointed to assist scientific investigations bearing on trade and industry, to enable the Empire to compete successfully with its highly organic- rivals.
