The Grand National candidate Styrax, who has been galloping strongly at Hawera, was sent down last week to Wanganui, whero better facilities are available for schooling. Provided he is landed at the post as fit as when ho won the Century Hurdles so easily, Styrax whould mako a bold showing in the National Hurdles. Freeman Holmes Ls expected to reach Christchurch to-day from America. The well-known trainer of trotters and pacers has evidently had an enjoyable time, for in the couree of a letter to Mr W. E. Simes ho says:---*'My last trip to America was a pleasant ond in all respects, but this visit has beon oven more enjoyable. The moro you know of Americans tho truest of friends you find them, and their hospitality is unsurpassed. Tho. trainers over here are uncommonly free with advice and information, and afford almost any competent reinsman an opportunity of handling their horses. Their horses are well-mannered, and beautifully gaited, and one has an enjoyable spin behind them."
