SOLDIERS' DEBTS.
— » - ORDERS OX PAY NOT LEGAL. (SPECIAL TO "TTtK PEBSS.") AVELLINGTON, July 23. From time to time applications have boon mado to tlie I>ofene© Department to recognise orders o;t pay for debts of members of tlie Expeditionary Force. In making it clear that the Department caunot accept such orders, district orders state: —"The Department has its own work to do in training and equipping tho mcv and in paying allotments to relatives and dependants, and it "cannot uudertako to add to its duty the collection of debts." Orders on soldiers' pay. it is stated, have no legal authority whatever. * It is pointed out also to the misguided soldier who thinks enlistment provides sufficient excuse for his evading liabilities, that he is in n© way exempt from tho civil or criminal process of the ordinary courts. Creditors can take proceedings in the ordinary course, and on a judgment summons there is nothing to prevent a soldier being arrested and imprisoned by order of a Magistrate.
