LIVERPOOL CAMP.
SERIOUS ALLEGATIONS. NOT ENOUGH) RIFLES. (Received July 23rd_ 10 p.m.) SYDNEY, July 23. At the Liverpool Camp enquiry a sanitary officer gave evidence that he made a point of questioning all patients in the hospital, and in every instance got an emphatic assurance that they were satisfied and content with the treatment. Other evidence disclosed that some reinforcements were sent away before tbey could receive the necessary musketry instruction. The musketry instructor declared, in reply to a question, that the majority of the trainees had received none, and more than half the recruits did not know how to load or unload, Staff-Sergeant Chalker, in his evidence, Baid there were not enough rifles for the recruit.. He said he was prepared to answer any questions, but if ho answered too many freely he later on might suffer. Mr Justice Rich suggested that he might take witness's answers privately. Chalker said this would not help him, as any evidence detrimental to the heads of the Department could leak out. Counsel said he had been definitely instructed by the Department to give an assurance that there would be no victimisation. Any way, witness's subsequent evidence was confined to a few harmless questions. ... Mr Justice Rich presented an interim report, which suggests improvements in latrines and increases in the medical and Commandants' staffs, a better supply of hot water, and better management for cooking, including medical examination of amateur cooks and insistence on their cleanliness.
