Progress of the War.
The German offensive in Poland progresses, though to-day's news does not report such marked successes as yesterday's. Beginning at tho extremo north, they claim a victory on the Dubissa, in tho Courland province. They also report a success between Mariampol and Kovqo, north-east of iho Masurian Lakes. More important s-ro the operations about' the chain of fortresses north and north-cast of Warsaw. Novgorod, where another advance is reported, is on tho Narew, between Loinza and Ostroleka, and' llozonyj tho scene of another success, is on the river, south, of Ostroleka. Tho advances at Pultusk and Novo Georgievsk, the fortresses nearest Warsaw, appear to havo been checked. Wβ next come to the enemy's thrust at' Warsaw from the west and southwest-. Ho reports that the Russians are falling back towards Grojeo, which is about thirty miles almost due south of the city. Further south tho enemy, moving past Radom, has advanced near to tho Vistula at IvangoroU, a' fortress half-way between Warsaw and Galicia, and the centre of an important railway system. The llusfiians claim to have thrown the enemy back on tho Narew, near Ostroleka, and to havo checked the offonsivo south, of Lublin. Tho Austrians, however, ciaim to havo picrred the lino at some points in tho Lublin region. Whatever the result, the Russian resistance was most stubborn, and if tho enemy gained ground, it was not much. Tho Western theatre exhibits the usual appearanco of comparative tranquility. Tho French havo gained ground in Alsace, and their aircraft continue their aggressive activity. The increased attention paid to the enemy's depots may bo a prelude to an advance r From tho Italian theairo comes an Austrian claim to have recaptured positions in tho Gorizia region, thereby rendering useless heavy Italian expenditure in lives, but tho Italians definitely report progress at two points, ono of them beins heights commandinj: Gorizia.
