BOROUGH COUNCILS.
SPEBTDON.
The Sproydon Borough Council met last night.- Present: —The Mayor (Mr W. H. Wineor), and Crs. E. H. CUrk, A. Manhire, E. Hayee, W. J. Elliott, G. H. Rudd, D. Williamson, E. O'ltourke, and It. H. Taylor. The Mayor, in his statement, said that many enquiries had been made as to electric lighting, and several people desired to connect with the city supply. As the Council's scheme -would bo soon placed before the ratepayers, he had told those desiring to connect with the city that the Council would refuse to allow such connexions to bo made. It was decided that the Mayor should take Mr Whiting's place on the Patri-, otic Fund Committee. Mr Joshua Little attended on behalf of tho Canal League, and addressed tho Council. It was decided to fir a date later on. which to discuss the matter. The Mayor and Cr. Taylor were appointed, to represent the • at tho Conference to-morrow, regarding the best means of increasing tho Patriotic Fund. The Spreydon Beautifying Association was jriven permtßsion to plant fifty I trees on the south 6ide of jVfill road from Cobham street to Edinburgh ! street. I Tho Finance Committee reported:— I Receipts—Kates £31 15s 2d, general £20 3s 6d; total £51 18s Bd. Accounts were recommended for payment: District Fund £303 14s 6d. Pit Account £61 10s; total £3(36 4s 6d. The District Fund' Account was in debit £302 11s; Loan Account dr. £11 6s sd; Pit Account £48 8s Bd. The report was adopted. The committee also submitted rough estimates for 1015-16. The receipts were estimated at £2609 and the expenditure at £3126 ss. The Works Committee reported that the Woolstoii Borough Council wished to hiro the road roller for another week. The worst part of Cobham, Harrington, and Frankleigh streete, and River road-had been patched. The. report was agreed to. Cr. Taylor moTed : —"That the Council take the necessary steps to abolish the ward system at present in operation in the borough." Cr.<Clark seconded the motion, which after a lengthy discussion was agreed to, in the form that a committee should collect information as to tho steps' to *be taken to abolish the ward system, and also as to how proportional representation would work. . It was decided +0 ask the Tramway Board to stop leaving trailers standing at Coronation street.
