LIFE-SAVING.
SIB JOHN HALL SHIELD
At tho Normal School yostcrday the Sir John Hall Shield for Life-Savins ■was presented to the •winning team by 31 r J. D. - Hall. The function took place in the playground. Amongst those i>resent c were: —Messrs W. E. D. Bishop (chairman), and A. G. Sanderson (secretary), of tho Canterbury Centre New Zealand A.S.A., Walter Johnson, and G. E. Bilison (secretary Canterbury Centre- Royal Life Saving Society). Mr Y m T. Ager, chairman of the Canterbury Centre of the Life-feaving Society, was unable to be present. Mr J. D. Hal] gave an account of the inauguration of the shield, which was given to encourage schoolboys to learn swimming. He knew of no better physical exercise than swimming, and referred especially to the practice it save in proper breathing. In handins the shield to Mr C. T. Aschman, , the headmaster, he congratulated the I school'on its success. ( \ Mr Hall then presented tho medals as follows: — J. Wyn Irwin (instructor), J. C. Hardie. E. C. M. Ryland, M. J. Grimmer, and A. E. Lawrence. He also presented the following with certificates of the itoyai life Saving Society : —M. J . Unmmer. E. P. Goodsir. J. C. Hardie, L. G. L. Wilson, E. C. M. Ryland, A. R. Bradbury, Gordon W. McFedriee. D. McCWI and F. Jacobs. Mr Aschman called for cheers for Mr Hali and the other gentlemen, "which were given heartily, as were also ■ cheera for the winning team.
