The Hon. .Tame. Allen ("Minister of Defence) left Wellington for thc South last night. He will proceed to his home by rail from Christchurch to-day, and probably will, be back in Wellington on Tuesday morning.

Tlie He.i._ TV. Morgan, M.L.C., who has boon laid aside for some weeks by a serious illness, is now much improved in health.

Captain Duncan, N.Z.M.0., of Hanmer Springs, who has been appointed medical officer to tho Maori Reinforcements, will bo leaving for Auckland shortly.- During his absence Dr. Moreland, of Christchurch, will bo in charge at the Government Sanatorium at- Hanmer Springs.

Pilot Maxwell, who has been a member of the Otago Harbour JJoard's pilot •staff for tho past six years, has been appointed to .ho conimand of the steamer Manapouri, which will leavo Port Chalmers in a. day or two for Japan.

Two young Aucklandei's left for England by the Vancouver steamer on Tuesday to offer their services to tho War Office for tho Flying Corps. They aro Mr Norman Davenport, of Epsom, and Mr Eric: Calder. son of Mr C Calder. M_ Harold Cotter, son of the late Mr T. Cotter, also left by the Ma-1-ura for England, where lie- will ofi'ei his services for the war.

Tho death is reported of Mrs Susannah Evelyn Prideaux Moffitt, of Wellington, relict of the late John Lindsay Moflitt. who predeceased her some eight years ago, and youngest daughter ot this _ lato ' Captain Fort una tin. Evelyn Wright, Royal Navy, and niece of the lato Captain Francis Liardet, R.N. Mrs Moflitt had reached the age of 81 years. 'Amongst her connexions were many who havo made history (says the "New Zealand Times"). She was a niece of the late Sir Hugh Evelyn, I3art., Wotton Park. Surrey, England, and her grandmother was' the Comtes.se de Lainamond d'Albe. who saw stirring times during the great French Revolution, when the Comtesse's brother, the Due de Lamamond d'Albe, was guillotined. Mrs Moffitt has cousins .'-erring at the front, including General Sir William Evelyn O'Leary and Colonel Tom Evelyn O'Loary. C.8., with the Indian Contingent. Tlie deceased lady leaves three .sons and five daughters. Mesdames A. Andrews. TV. D. Andrews, F. Reade. Louis _>.ad_, and A. G. IT. Moore. She was of a very kindly and retiring nature.

The president. *M r J. hutton, in presenting Air -Nordon with a pair of .ieid-gla.ses, spoke of Mr Nordou's many good qualities both as an oliicer of tho Association and as a citizen. M r Nordon, ho said, had a particularly strenuoutime of it during the general elections, and bis health having broken down ho liad been advised to seek change of scene and a lengthy rest. Referring to Mr Nordon's activities as a citizen, Mr Sutton mentioned tho keen interest shown by him in furthering the various funds in connex_on with the war —the Patriotic, Belgium and Red Cross Fundi; —and spoke of tha excellent work he bad done on tho committees of those funds. On behalf of the members of the Association he hoped that Mr Nordon wouid have a p'ea—int voyage and return to Christchurch greatly restored in health.
