CASUALTIES.
At Bealey Flat yesterday, an incjuest was held by Mr Fitzgerald, act-ing-Coroner, on tho body of Patrick Twomoy, who was killed as a result of a premature explosion in the Otira tunnel. The following verdict was returned: "We a% of the opinion that the deceased met his death as the result of an explosion whilo assisting to charge a hole in the bottom heading face of the Bealey end of the Arthur's Pass tunnel, there being no evidence to show how thc explosion occurred."
..n elderly man, named Thomas Couglan, attempted to commit suicide last evening hy cutting his throat with a pocket knife. Couglan. who resides with his son-in-law at 249 Kilmoro street, is 73 years of age. Sergeant Clarkson ami -Constable Gordon arrived at tho house at about 5.15 p.m. in answer to a telcphono call, and Dr. Borrie was also in attendance. Couglan had been found by his son-in-law in an outhouse with bis throat cut. and a blood-stained pocket knifo alongside him. Dr. Borrie found on examination that the windpipe had been cut, and that Couglan wa*; breathing through the cut. He applied temporary dressing, and ordered the man's removal to tho Hospital.
