GERMANY AND AMERICA.
THE AMERICAN NOTE,
DEEP IMPRESSION IN GERM.VNY
TRUCULENT TONE ABANDONED,
AMSTERDAM. June 17. Tho American Note has created a deep impression in Germany.
Tho "Cologne Gazette" has abandoned its truculent tone, and admits that it would be imbecile for Germain- to desire another enemy. Nevertheless the torpedoing of merchant ships cannot «.ns3 until Britain relinquishes her economic blockade. The "Gazette" falls foul 0 f the •Lokalanzeiger,*' which does not share
the belief that the British blockade is vilo and points out that Germany is very glad to employ similar tactics against Britain.
The "Kreuy. Zeitung'' is similarly indignant, at the "LokalanzeigorV' candid admissions. and says:—"Thero must be no weakening of the weapon of submarine warfare, which is the foundation of all negotiations."
The American question has given riso to a bitter newspaper controversy, t-ino papers suggesting that Herr yon Jagow (Minister for Foreign .\ffair_) should bo replaced by an Imperial board to conduct foreign policy. Others desiro to recall Prince yon Bulow to power.
