COLONIAL CONFIDENCE.
READINESS TO TAKE COMMAND.
SYDNEY, June 18
Captain Bean, the official reporter with the Australians, writes: —"One of tho most remarkable qualities of the Australian and Now Zealand troops during the first three days was that many of tho men wero living in trenches a quarter of a mile away from the nearest officer. Some corporal or sergeant rose to the occasion nnd took control, with the complete confidence of his men. Many men in tho trenches during these critical days never saw an officer, as there were not enough to go around. The subordinate commanders did not hesitate to tako control, and showed j wonderful capacity."
