EDUCATION BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING

The North Canterbury Education Board met yesterday, there being present: — Messrs George Ilennie (chairman), T. \V. Adams, W. A. Banks, FI. Boyd. M. Dalziel, J. Jamieson, W. H. Collin", E. 11. Andrews, and C.-H. Opie.

j The Normal School and Technical Committee reported that the matter of lii site tor the new manual training I centre tlie Board proposed to establish | for East Christchurch was further con- : sidered, in relation to the several tramline routes and the positions of the surrounding schools It was decided that, everything considered, the corner of Gloucester and Barhadocs streets would prove the most suitable- site. It was accordingly agreed to inform the Christchurch East School Committee that the Board proposed to have tho building erected on this site. —Tho report was referred back to the committee.

The Chief Instructor in Agriculture reported that his visits to schools in the southern and western districts had been continued. Too muck time wa. being devoted in a large number of schools to in-door work, consequently the manual character of the instruction was being lost sight of. while few schools mado their courses experimental in character.

. _ A letter was received from the School Committees' Association. protesting against the proposed exclusion of the •South Canterbury district from North Canterbury, and also against tho proposal to include the. two Westland education districts in that of Canterbury; also protesting against the provisions of the Education Act under which every school district must be'wholly within o"r, wholly without an urban area. Such provision, the Association pointed out, would disfranchise a very large number of householders.

" On the motion of Mr Collins it was decided to support the protest against the /proposed exclusion of South Canterbury.

i The chairman moved that the Board protest against the proposal that the southern portion of the North Canterbury district should be placed in the South Canterbury district, and that he, with Messrs Collins and Dalziel. should be a committee to draw up reasons for submission to the Commissioner.-'. The motion was carried. It was decided that the boundaries of tho existing cit3' wards should bo continued. A letter was received from the Department asking tho Board's opinion as to the conduct of tho teachers' physical training classes and tho work done. It was decided to reply expressing satisfaction with tho work done.
